Project Coordinator and Inclusion Specialist for China and Southeast Asia
Helen McCabe joined Perkins in 2012. Although she is new to being on staff, her first connection with Perkins International dates back to 1998 when she met a Perkins Educational Leadership Program (ELP) graduate, Peng Xiaguang. At that time, Helen was volunteering and doing research in China. With over 20 years of experience in the special education field, predominantly in China, Ms. McCabe is a great addition to Perkins.
Ms. McCabe began volunteering with children with autism in Nanjing, China in 1992. She later earned a doctorate in Special Education and International/Comparative Education from Indiana University, in 2004. Her research focus was on intervention for young children with autism in China provided at both governmental and non-governmental organizations. During graduate school, she worked as a teacher and behavior therapist for children with autism in Massachusetts. She concentrated on providing instruction using discrete trial teaching.
Ms. McCabe has been providing teacher and parent training in China since 2000. In 2006, she co-founded The Five Project, a non-governmental organization. Based in Massachusetts, The Five Project is dedicated to providing training and information to Chinese families and teachers. It was through this work that she discovered more about Perkins International's partnerships with China.
She currently coordinates projects in China, specifically in Sichuan, Yunnan, and Shanxi provinces. The projects focus on promoting inclusion and improving educational opportunities for all children with disabilities.
